If your business website is a brochure site, a blog or a lead-generation page with modest traffic, shared hosting is the right choice: it’s cheap, fast enough and fully managed for you. Move to private hosting (a VPS, cloud plan or dedicated server) when your site runs an online store at scale, a web application, or anything where slow pages or downtime directly cost you money.
We get asked this question every week by business owners in Ahmedabad and across India. Most are either paying for a server they don’t need or squeezing a growing store onto a plan that can’t keep up. This guide explains the difference in plain language and helps you pick the right one for where your business is today.
What is shared hosting?
With shared hosting, your website lives on a server alongside many other websites. Everyone shares the same CPU, memory and storage, and the hosting company manages the server for you: security patches, software updates, backups and the control panel.
Think of it like renting a flat in a well-run apartment building. Maintenance is included and the rent is low, but you share the lift and the water supply. If a neighbour throws a big party, you might notice.
Modern shared server hosting is much better than it used to be. Providers like Hostinger cap each account’s resources so one busy neighbour can’t take down everyone else, and LiteSpeed servers with built-in caching make well-built sites genuinely fast.
Who shared hosting suits
- Company websites, portfolios and service pages
- Blogs and content sites with up to tens of thousands of visits a month
- Landing pages for Google and Meta ad campaigns
- Small WooCommerce stores with a modest catalogue
- Clinics, schools, real estate projects and local businesses
What is private hosting?
“Private hosting” means your site gets resources that aren’t shared with anyone else. There are three main types.
Virtual private server (VPS)
A virtual private server splits one powerful physical machine into isolated virtual machines. Each VPS virtual private server gets guaranteed vCPU, RAM and storage, plus root access, so you can install whatever software you need.
In our apartment analogy, a VPS is an independent villa inside a gated society. The land is shared, but your house, water tank and electricity meter are your own.
Cloud hosting
Cloud hosting gives you dedicated resources like a VPS, but the provider still manages the server for you. Hostinger’s cloud plans, for example, keep the simple hPanel dashboard while giving your sites their own CPU and memory. It’s the easiest step up from shared hosting.
Dedicated server
A dedicated server hosting service gives you an entire physical machine. Nothing is shared at all. It’s the most powerful and most expensive option, and it’s usually only necessary for very high-traffic platforms, large databases, or strict compliance needs.
Worth knowing: for most businesses, a high-tier VPS now delivers what a dedicated server did a few years ago, at a fraction of the price. Hostinger’s lineup centres on shared, cloud and VPS plans rather than bare-metal dedicated machines, and its largest VPS (8 vCPU, 32 GB RAM) covers almost every business workload we see.
Shared hosting vs private hosting: side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Shared hosting | Cloud hosting | VPS | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resources | Shared, with limits | Dedicated, managed | Dedicated, isolated | Whole machine |
| Typical cost | Lowest | Moderate | Moderate | Highest |
| Who manages the server | Host | Host | You (or your agency) | You (or your agency) |
| Technical skill needed | None | None | Linux admin | Advanced |
| Root access | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Performance under load | Good with caching | Strong | Strong | Strongest |
| Scaling up | Change plan | Change plan | Resize VPS | Buy new hardware |
| Best for | Small business sites, blogs | Growing stores, busy sites | Web apps, SaaS, custom stacks | Very large platforms |
What it actually costs: Hostinger prices compared
Here’s what each step looks like on Hostinger in India, using the current Black Friday sale prices on long terms (excluding GST):
| Plan type | Hostinger plan | Sale price | Renews at | Resources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | Premium | ₹139/mo | ₹449/mo | 3 websites, shared resources |
| Shared hosting | Unlimited | ₹199/mo | ₹649/mo | Unlimited websites, shared resources |
| Cloud hosting | Cloud Startup | ₹599/mo | ₹1,599/mo | Dedicated resources, managed |
| VPS | KVM 2 | ₹799/mo* | ₹1,199/mo | 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe |
| VPS | KVM 8 | ₹2,199/mo* | ₹4,399/mo | 8 vCPU, 32 GB RAM, 400 GB NVMe |
Shared and cloud prices from Hostinger’s Sale Season cards, 48-month term (source). *VPS prices from Hostinger’s India VPS page, September 2026 (source); the Black Friday sale lists VPS from ₹599/mo. Check live prices before buying.
The gap between shared hosting and a private server is smaller than most people expect, often a few hundred rupees a month. The bigger hidden cost of a VPS is management time: someone has to apply updates, watch security and fix problems at 2 a.m.
Five signs you’ve outgrown shared hosting
You don’t need to guess. These are the signals we look for when reviewing a client’s hosting:
- Resource limit warnings. hPanel’s resource usage page shows you hitting CPU, memory or process limits regularly, especially at the same times each day.
- Slow pages that caching can’t fix. Logged-in pages, carts, checkouts and dashboards can’t be fully cached. If those are slow, you need more dedicated power.
- Traffic spikes from campaigns. If a Meta or Google ad campaign, a festival sale or a news mention brings sudden traffic and the site struggles, you need headroom.
- You need software shared hosting can’t run. Background queue workers, Redis, Node.js services, WebSockets or custom PHP extensions all need a private server. Our Laravel hosting guide (internal link to Article 2) explains this in detail.
- Compliance or isolation requirements. Some clients, such as healthcare or finance, prefer an isolated environment where only their own data and software live on the server.
If none of these apply, stay on shared hosting and spend the savings on content or marketing.
Which should you choose? Real scenarios
Here’s how we’d advise different types of businesses, based on projects we’ve delivered:
| Business | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Local shop, clinic or consultancy website | Shared hosting (Premium) | Mostly static pages, light traffic, no admin needed |
| Real estate project with lead forms and ad campaigns | Shared hosting (Premium or Unlimited) | Fast cached landing pages handle ad traffic well |
| Agency hosting several client sites | Shared hosting (Unlimited) or Cloud | Many sites under one account, easy management |
| WooCommerce store with hundreds of daily orders | Cloud Startup | Dedicated resources for uncacheable cart and checkout |
| Custom web app, SaaS or ERP built on Laravel | VPS (KVM 2 or KVM 4) | Needs queues, Redis, root access |
| High-traffic platform or large database | VPS (KVM 8) or dedicated server | Maximum resources and isolation |
Managed vs unmanaged: the question nobody asks
Shared and cloud hosting are managed: the host keeps the server secure and updated. A VPS is usually unmanaged: you get the keys, and the responsibility. That’s fine if you have a developer on the team, but it’s risky if no one will apply security patches.
If you want the power of a VPS without the admin work, either choose cloud hosting, or have an agency manage the server for you. When comparing virtual private server hosting services, always ask who handles updates, backups and monitoring, because that’s where the real cost sits.

FAQ
What is the main difference between shared hosting and a VPS?
With shared hosting, many websites share one server’s CPU and memory, and the host manages everything. With a VPS (virtual private server), your site gets guaranteed resources in its own isolated environment and full root access, but you or your agency manage the server.
Is shared hosting good enough for a business website?
Yes, for most small and medium business websites. Modern shared hosting with LiteSpeed caching easily handles company sites, blogs and lead-generation pages. You only need a private server once you run a busy online store, a web application, or software that shared hosting can’t run.
When should I upgrade from shared server hosting to a virtual private server?
Upgrade when you regularly hit resource limits, when logged-in or checkout pages are slow despite caching, when ad campaigns cause traffic spikes your site can’t handle, or when you need software like queue workers or Redis. If none apply, shared server hosting is the better-value choice.
Is a VPS virtual private server more secure than shared hosting?
A VPS virtual private server is more isolated, so another customer’s problems can’t affect your site. But it’s only more secure if it’s maintained: unpatched software on a VPS is riskier than a well-managed shared plan. If you don’t have someone to manage it, consider cloud hosting instead.
Do I need a dedicated server hosting service for my business?
Most businesses don’t. A dedicated server hosting service makes sense for very high-traffic platforms, very large databases or strict compliance requirements. For nearly everyone else, a high-tier VPS or cloud plan delivers similar performance at a much lower cost.
Which webhosting services does Hostinger offer?
Hostinger’s webhosting services include shared web hosting, WordPress hosting, cloud hosting, VPS hosting, domains and business email. Its plans are managed from one hPanel account, so you can move from shared hosting to cloud or a VPS without switching providers.
Can I use a Hostinger Black Friday coupon when upgrading to a VPS?
Generally yes. Hostinger coupon codes typically apply to new VPS, cloud and shared hosting purchases of 12 months or more, for the first term. Try 1MAYANKDOMA25 at checkout before the sale ends on 14 December 2026.
